CLEANER will be a networked infrastructure of environmental field facilities that enables formulation and development of engineering and policy options for the restoration and protection of environmental resources.

CLEANER will:

  • Define and characterize what "sustainability" means for a given system, help foresee outcomes of change, and lead to improved management of ecological systems by controlling anthropogenic inputs and applying remediation techniques
  • Standardize data collection, promote standard protocols, and improve data comparability, quality assurance and quality control
  • Promote collaboration, technology transfer, and communication within fields, among fields, between academic and non-academic institutions, and among stakeholders
  • Enable the identification of research trends with national implications that could not otherwise be detected at autonomous sites
